This is quite a long trip and requires at least a long weekend to complete. The stretch on Macquarie Harbour can be either dead calm or a blustering north westerly which will kick up the waves. It can be good for a sail, at least one way. There are quite a few side trips including visiting Sarah Island an old convict gaol. Hells Gates has very strong tidal currents but a visit to the area is worthwhile. Towards the Gordon river you can head over to the old site of Pillinger, where steamers once tied up. The trip up the Gordon River to the Franklin falls is quite long but the reflections can be magnificent. It may be possible to hitch a lift on the many tourist boats that visit this area every day. Camping spots along the shores of Macquarie Harbour can be hard to find.
